How is PEMF different than TENS therapy?

May 13, 2014

How the treatment works:

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator) delivers a signal configured to interrupt the body’s pain signal.  It is usually used for pain management and masks pain, similar to pain medication.

The Assisi Loop has a different mechanism of action which enhances a biochemical process in the body to actually accelerate healing.

How treatment feels:

Cat tPEMF TherapyTo interrupt pain signals along the nerve, TENS units deliver a level of energy that can be ‘felt’ and is often uncomfortable or at least noticeable to the animal.

The Assisi Loop tPEMF induces gentle microcurrents which will not disturb animals who are already in pain.  Occasionally animals will notice a subtle difference.  We attribute this to the increased blood flow from tPEMF which creates the sensation of warming.

How treatment is applied:

TENS units are capacitively coupled through two electrodes which have to be in skin contact. The TENS signal passes through tissue between the two electrodes.

The Assisi Loop is inductively coupled and can be placed over dressings/bandages.  tPEMF treats more tissue area to a greater depth

Overview on the terms:

Horse tPEMF TherapyTENS -- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

tPEMF -- targeted Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy which is the type of therapy the Assisi Loop offers.
